It’s that time of year again! On Sunday, March 8th, clocks spring forward one hour as Daylight Saving Time begins. While losing an hour of sleep is never fun, the payoff is worth it — longer, sunnier evenings are headed our way. Here are some tips and ideas from the Orange Hunt Community Board to help you and your family adjust smoothly and take full advantage of the extra daylight.
Ease Into the Time Change
The sudden shift can throw off sleep schedules, especially for kids and pets. Try these strategies to make the transition easier:
- Start going to bed 15 minutes earlier a few days before the change
- Keep a consistent morning routine — eat breakfast and get outside at the same time
- Limit screen time before bed to help your body’s internal clock adjust
- Take a short afternoon walk to reset your energy levels
Get Outside After Dinner
One of the best perks of springing forward? Evenings stay lighter until almost 7:30 PM! Take advantage of the extra daylight by heading outside after dinner. The Orange Hunt trails behind the community center are perfect for a family stroll, and the playground stays usable well into the evening. You’ll be amazed how much better you sleep after soaking up that late-afternoon sunshine.
Start Your Spring Garden
Daylight Saving Time is nature’s reminder that spring planting season is right around the corner. Here in West Springfield, our USDA Zone 7a climate means you can start prepping your beds now:
- Cool-weather veggies like lettuce, spinach, and peas can go in the ground soon
- Start tomato and pepper seeds indoors under a grow light
- Clean up winter debris and add fresh compost to your garden beds
Join a Neighborhood Activity
Longer days mean more time for community connection! Here are a few ways to make the most of the season right here in Orange Hunt:
- Evening dog walks — the loop around Orange Hunt Elementary is a favorite route
- Pickup basketball at the community court
- Front porch hangouts — wave to your neighbors, bring out some lemonade, and enjoy the evening air
- Bike rides along the trails connecting to Huntsman Lake, Lake Mercer , Burke Lake or Lake Accotink Park
Don’t Forget These Quick To-Dos
While you’re adjusting your clocks, the Community Board recommends tackling a few seasonal to-dos:
- Change smoke detector batteries — a twice-a-year habit that saves lives
- Check outdoor lights — replace any burnt-out bulbs on porches and walkways
- Update your car clock — yes, some of us still have to do this manually!
- Review emergency kits — swap out expired water and snacks
